4 Habits YOU Need to Work from Home

These days, we’ve all been hearing the same term all over the place – ‘the new normal’. As we recover and adjust to a world that has been changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we all have to grow accustomed to new daily habits. So, what is the new normal, and what does it mean? Well, for many people, it means working from home. The idea of getting to work in the comfort of your own home may be especially appealing to many people, but the truth is that it’s not always easy.

Working from home presents its own specific set of challenges that you won’t see in an external workplace. Individuals who work from home have cited difficulties with distractions, motivation, and loneliness as factors that contribute to making working from home difficult at times. But don’t worry, just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible or that you can’t maintain a healthy lifestyle and work from home. Here are a few tips to help streamline your work habits and maintain a healthy work environment.

Keep Regular Hours

There are two important elements here – starting work and stopping work. Set a time when you need to sign off for the day – even if your email dings to tell you that you are needed. In fact, maybe you even need to switch those notifications off for the day when you’re done. Creating structure, balance, and setting boundaries will give you more control over your work habits.

Get Dressed for the Day

As tempting as it might be to stay in your pajamas. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it will help you feel ready for the day if you’re dressed for it. This can help transition you from home to work mode by creating a routine where you get ready and ‘commute’ to work.

Keep a Private, Designated Space for Working

Having a workspace that is specifically not for leisure will help you compartmentalize work and home life. When you leave your designated workspace for the day, you’re off the clock. Simple as that!

Maintain Connections

This applies to both work and social life. Take the time to find connections related to your line of work. One way you can do this is to schedule check-ins with your fellow remote workers to share ideas or even just to chat.

Whether you’re new to working from home or you have been doing it for a while, it’s important to maintain healthy habits and structure to help mitigate the downsides to working from home. With the right tools and habits, you can make this work!
